Everyday people’s lives depend on the quick reaction and competent care of emergency medical technicians and paramedics. They respond to everything varying from automobile accidents, heart attacks, slips and falls, childbirth, and injuries that require immediate medical attention. EMTs and paramedics are most of the time dispatched by a 911 operator to the scene and often work in connection with law enforcement and firefighters. When they arrive on the scene of an accident, they’ll begin by assessing the patient’s condition and then will transport to the nearest hospital.

Several different types of EMT and paramedics exists including Air Ambulance Paramedics, Bicycle Response Paramedics, Community Emergency Response Team and MICA paramedics. The Air Ambulance Paramedics are paramedics that are selected from ambulance paramedics who have at least two years experience after qualifying as a paramedic. Bicycle Response Ambulance Paramedics, often times, is not a full time service, they have a level of fitness and sometimes are involved in marathon cycling outside of work. The Bicycle Response Paramedics often work at special events, such as race meetings and New Year’s Eve parties, where there are large crowds and difficult access. Community Emergency Response Paramedics consist of ambulance volunteers who function as ‘first responders’ within communities where the nearest ambulance branch is located a considerable distance away. They are in trained in basic life support and under take regular training and maintenance and they’re also coordinated and delivered by a paramedic manager.

EMTs and paramedics use special equipment such as backboards which are used to immobilize patients before placing them on stretchers and securing them in the ambulance for transport to a hospital. Either an EMT or paramedic will drive the ambulance while the others monitor the individual’s vital signs on the way to the hospital. Some EMTs or paramedics may also be part of a helicopter’s flight crew to quickly transport critically ill or injured patients to hospitals. EMTs and paramedics are trained to work in every environmental and weather conditions, whether indoor or outdoors. They are required to do considerable kneeling, bending, and heavy lifting and many EMTs and paramedics work irregular and very long work hours. They need equipment, clothing and gear that can keep up with their demands and the demands of a challenging career. Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) have a higher clinical skill set and can perform more advanced medical procedures. They’re training includes perform advanced airway management, complex management of patients with head injuries, treat life threatening chest injuries and advanced management of cardiac conditions.
