Everyday people’s lives depend on the quick reaction and competent care of emergency medical technicians and paramedics. EMTs and paramedics use special equipment such as backboards which are used to immobilize patients before placing them on stretchers and securing them in the ambulance for transport to a hospital. Either an EMT or paramedic will drive the ambulance while the others monitor the individual’s vital signs on the way to the hospital. Some EMTs or paramedics may also be part of a helicopter’s flight crew to quickly transport critically ill or injured patients to hospitals. EMTs and paramedics are trained to work in every environmental and weather conditions, whether indoor or outdoors. They are required to do considerable kneeling, bending, and heavy lifting and many EMTs and paramedics work irregular and very long work hours. They need equipment, clothing and gear that can keep up with their demands and the demands of a challenging career. Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) have a higher clinical skill set and can perform more advanced medical procedures.
