5.11 Tactical Company Profile

If you are new here or if you just haven’t noticed, we carry a wide array of 5.11 Tactical products. They are one of the biggest names in the manufacture of tactical clothing, offering clothes for Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technician’s, Law Enforcement Officers, Private Military Contractors and firearm and outdoor enthusiasts. One thing that has been proven over the years is that their clothing and products are made with great care and provide versatility.

The 5.11 Tactical company started with mountain climbers. They started with pants bearing the 5.11 name, named after the hardest level of rock climbing at Yosemite. They are thus most famous fro their cargo pants that were built initially for climbing but soon the world came to see how durability, high quality and most of all versatile these were and started using them for other applications – tactical applications.

The pant had a lot of cross over appeal. For instance the tactical strap that is now used for radios and handcuffs was designed to hold runners and carabineers. Another feature is their double stitched and reinforced needs that are initially designed to withstand the rigors that the knees undergo during rock climbing. Also they had slanted pockets designed so that the pockets could be easily accessed when someone was wearing a climbing harness.

The 5.11 Tactical pants were first used as tactical pants when a couple FBI agents who also did some recreational rock climbing discovered that the pants would work just as well in their job duties and for everyday wear. They wore them in Quantico, Virgina at the FBI Academy and other agents noticed and the rest is history as they say.

In 1999 Dan Costa a Modesto entrepreneur purchased 51% of the Royal Robbins company and then purchased the remainder of the company in 2001 naming the whole thing 5.11 Tactical. Over the years the design of the pants have been tweaked. The edges of the pockets now feature double reinforced stitching and so you can carry a pocket knife without having to worry about the pockets fraying. They also moved the accessory pouch from the right leg onto the left to provide storage for a spare cell phone or magazine. They have also added other colors outside of khaki over the years as well.

5.11 Tactical not only makes pants these days but also makes shirts, shorts, jackets and vests. They have expanded beyond clothing items as well to now include a number of different tactical bags, rucksacks, knives, footwear, eye wear and flashlights. They continue to remain successful by using the feedback they receive from their end users to improve their current products to create new products.

5.11 Taclite Pro Pants

The 5.11 Taclite Pro Pants is rugged and well designed just like any other clothing option offered by the manufacturer. What’s great is that though this is a tactical pant it does do an excellent job for casual or travel wear. It is also made in two versions – one for males and one for females.

These pants have the design of their basic cargo pant and has a similar layout where the pockets are concerned. It is made from rip stop material making the pant breathable and light yet strong.

The 5.11 Taclite Pro Pants have the cargo pockets along with a magazine pouch that has velcro to secure its contents. The magazine pouch is a great place for non tactical folks to store their iPhone or other smart phone. There are large rear pockets on the pants that allow great room for your wallet and more.

The material used to make the 5.11 Taclite Pro Pants provides a bit of water resistance and is also water resistant. If you spill food or drink on them you will be able to wipe them off with just a damp cloth.

5.11 Tactical Winter TacLite

Review of The 5.11 Tactical All Hazards PRIME Pack

This pack is really designed with tacticality in mind, as a matter of fact it barely misses being a combat pack for soldiers. It can be used by police officers or for a prepper or a weekend hiker. It can be used as an active shooter response bag, a basic bug out bag or as a hiking bag equipped with the necessary items to live through a night in the wild.

The pack has the design of a basic pack but is extremely versatile with many options for customization. 5.11 Tactical Double Duty Responder Tool

If you are looking for a multi-purpose cutting tool the 5.11 Tactical Double Duty Responder Tool. This tool features a combo edge blade, a cord/webbing blade and a carbide glass breaker.

The 5.11 Tactical Double Duty Responder Tool has an overall length of 8.65 inches when the main blade is locked in the open position and a length of 5.2 inches when the main blade is locked in the closed position. The combo edge blade is a 3.75 inch sheep’s foot blade with 3.5 inches of actual cutting edge. The cord/webbing blade is fully serrated and measures 1.6 inches with a 1 inch area of actual cutting edge. The carbide glass breaker can be found on the opposite end of the cord/webbing blade. To use the glass breaker you must close the cord/webbing blade in order to expose it for use.

Users will find the main blade easy to access with a rotate open mechanism. There is also the liner lock which locks the blade in place when it is opened for safety during use. There is an oval thumb hole which is big enough to allow the blade to be opened comfortably with the use of either hand even while wearing thicker gloves. The cord/webbing blade is on the opposite side and does not open ambidextrously because of the fact that the knife features pivoting locking blades. The liner lock for both of these blades is provided by a single piece of steel in the middle of the knife. You will find the liner lock for the cord/webbing blade to be on the back of the knife on the spine at the butt end. As mentioned above when the secondary blade is closed the carbide glass breaker tip is exposed. The knife features Rescue Orange FRN scales along with injection molded TPR grip points for more manageability of the tool.

All blades on the 5.11 Tactical Double Duty Responder Tool work well. It has a three position pocket clip though you may not consider this the type of tool you would have clipped to your pocket. This cutting tool is on the thick side being 5/8 inches thick. The clip allows for carrying the tool in the following positions;

Pivot end up, right side
Pivot end up, left side
Pivot end down, left side

You can also carry the tool pivot end down, right side but this would mean that each time you wanted to use the knife you would have to turn the knife around in your hand and then open it.

5.11 Tactical RUSH 12 Pack

The 5.11 Tactical Rush 12 pack is the smallest backpack in the Rush line. The Rush line also includes the RUSH 24 and the RUSH 72. The Rush 12 pack is thus suitable for a day hike or other short trips where you need enough items just for that day.

The pack comes with the 5.11 tactical logo patch and you can add your own name tape to personalize the pack as necessary. These will affix to the Velcro patches on the outside of the backpack. The pack features two different Velcro patch panels on its exterior. One panel is for name tape and the other is for a unit organization or business patch panel.

The pack has a capacity of 1330 cubic inches measuring 18 inches by 11 inches by 16 inches. Within the pack you will find a total of 14 compartments within which you can store and organize your gear. The bag features a pad pocket right next to its hydration pocket. The pad pocket is flat against your back and the hydration pocket has a capacity for a 3 L or 100 ounce bladder. The backpack has all the necessary ports for running the tube to the hydration bladder so you can access your water easily. There is a small felt lined zipper pocket to the top of the backpack right where the shoulder straps are attached to the pack. This of course is the eye glass pocket but it can be used to store small electronic devices that you want to keep close and want to store in a scratch free environment.

When it comes to the main compartment of the 5.11 Tactical Rush 12 pack you will find a full clam shell double zipped opening. There are two pockets inside the cover that are made from mesh. There is also another pocket – a shock corded computer computer where you can carry other items apart from a laptop such as documents and other things you may want to separate from the rest of the items in the pack.

The inside of the 5.11 Tactical RUSH 12 pack is not the only place you will find compartments. You will also find two compartments on the face of the main compartment on the exterior of the backpack. There is a smaller top pocket that has a single zipper opening. This pocket is suitable for a camera, cell phone or business cards etc. The other pocket is on the outside face of the pack and is larger with a full clam shell opening that closes with a zipper as well. Inside this pocket are a number of organizational pockets and pouches for storing documents, pens and other office related items. There are also two key ring hooks as well.

The other pocket on the outside face of the main compartment cover is larger and is also a full-clam-shell opening double zippered pocket. It’s lined with organizational pockets and pouches for pens and other office type stuff, and has two key-ring hooks (one on either side).

The 5.11 Tactical Rush 12 pack really is suitable for packing all the things you need for daily use. It will hold business cards, a laptop, camera, notepad, pens, candy, sunglasses and a number of other miscellaneous things. The outside of the bag is covered with MOLLE just in case you have used up the capacity of the interior of the pack and still have more stuff. You can add other pouches that are MOLLE compatible to carry all your stuff. Available in three colors; black, sandstone and multi-cam this backpack is a good buy which is worth its price and provides good value for money.

5.11 Tactical ATAC L2 Flashlight Review

The Tactical ATAC L2 flashlight uses two lithium batteries and hence the L2 in the name. This little light is made with an Aerospace grade aluminum body and with your purchase you get two CR123A batteries so you can start using your flashlight straight out of the package. It features a regulated circuit for maximum output and uses Cree XP-G LED.

The 5.11 Tactical ATAC L2 flashlight features Gold plated contacts and has an intelligent switch with high, low and strobe functions. It also features a momentary on switch as well as a rotary dial lock out switch and a stamped metal pocket clip with a black TPR soft touch anti roll ring. Also included with your purchase of this light is a break away lanyard.

The 5.11 Tactical ATAC L2 flashlight is constructed to be water resistant. It measures 5.3 inches in length and has a maximum diameter of 1.1 inch. The body diameter is approximately 1 inch and the light weighs 2.6 ounces without the batteries and 3.8 ounces with batteries. You will see from these measurements that the light is standard in size as well as it is in the materials used for its construction.

This light also has multiple function modes as mentioned above to include the low output, high output and strobe mode at high output. The flashlight is reported to provide a light output of 222 lumens and will last for up to 4 hours of continuous use. On the ultra low setting the light output is 10 lumens and at this level the batteries will last on average 74 hours. In strobe mode you can expect to get seven hours of continuous use.

The 5.11 Tactical ATAC L2 flashlight has a lockout switch which is one of its more liked features. This is a rotary dial lockout switch which prevents your light from accidentally discharging which is great if you are trying to hide and also so you wont drain your batteries. This also prevents the flashlight from getting too warm in your pocket.

At a very affordable price point the 5.11 Tactical ATAC L2 flashlight is a good choice. It performs well for a light of its price and with a Cree LED lamp assembly you know that it is durable and can withstand a couple blows without being damaged. It is great for use as a secondary light as well as a duty light on your duty belt. You can also use it as your emergency light and keep it in your car or in your bed side table or wherever else you need to keep an emergency light.

Surefire Crank Folding Utility Knife Review

The Surefire Crank Folding Utility Knife is a feature rich nice that has a nice feel to the hand. It is not just a knife as it also has a window punch on the butt or a glass breaker as it is otherwise called. It also functions as a screwdriver and a wrench – a 1/2 inch hexagonal opening is the wrench and it has slots cut into it where you can add coins to use as a screwdriver. There is also a bottle opener found close to the guard and a cord/harness cutter as well.

Yes the Surefire Crank Folding Utility Knife is a multipurpose tool and a great addition to your bag. Towards the top of the knife’s frame and close to the butt you will find the cord/harness cutter. It features a pocket clip which allows you to carry the knife with the blade pointing down when in your pocket. The pocket clip will stick out 1 inch above your pocket and isn’t reversible.

The blade is 3 inches long and features spring assisted opening with an automatic liner lock which locks the blade in place. The blade must be manually released once locked in place. The entire knife is held together with four Torx screws on each side. The blade is made from 154 CM steel. This is the best steel when it comes to resistance to corrosion and holding an edge. It is also used in knives that are made for heavy use as it is very strong steel.

When closed the Surefire Crank Folding Utility Knife measures 4 inches and weighs 3.2 ounces. When open it is 6.56 inches long and made with an aluminum frame so you can’t be too tough on this baby. Using the knife as a screwdriver can be a bit hard at first but with some practice you will get it. The large slot will be good with nickles and quarters and the smaller slot will work with pennies and dimes. You will need to get the coin into place with a finger wedge so it doesn’t fall out.

If you need a cutting tool for work but can’t carry a full out knife this knife does qualify as a rescue tool with its glass breaker and cord/harness cutter, knife blade among other functions. The cord cutter is not only for cutting cords but can be used to cut flex cuffs as well.

5.11 Tactical Scout Knife Review

5.11 Tactical started with their Royal Robbin’s pants and have become known for their tactical pants. They have added a number of products to their line since then though to include other clothing options including shirts, shorts and outerwear and have added watches, flashlights and knives like the 5.11 Tactical Scout Knife.

This knife is a folding knife and it meets all the requirements of a portable folding knife.

The 5.11 Tactical Scout Knife features a 3.5 inch flat grind plain edge spear point blade. The blade is stored within the knifes 4.75 inch grips when the knife is folded shut. These are ergonomically shaped so they are narrower closer to the pivot point but gets deeper as you get closer to the end. This kind of shape makes the knife good to use as it conforms nicely to the shape of the human hand. This means you will have a better and more secure grip when using the scout folding knife.

The knife also features grooves for your index and middle fingers. These grooves combined with the platform for your ring and pinky fingers give you ease of adjustment whenever you need to adjust your grip. There are handle slabs made from G-10 which gives the knife a slip resistant capability. The knife features liners and a liner lock which are crafted from stainless steel. Opening the blade will lock it into place with an audible “SNAP”.

You can open the blade of the 5.11 Tactical Scout Knife by rotating the arrow head hole and pushing the blade open until you hear the locking snap which means the blade is locked in position. The knife is ambidextrous and so you can easily do this with both hands and if you are not new to folding lock blade knives you will be able to easily open this knife by simply holding the knife in the correct position and flipping out your wrist.

At the price the 5.11 Tactical Scout knife is a good buy and it doesn’t look too aggressive. Being a 5.11 product you know it is built well, is fully functional and durable. It is a good choice if you are on the lookout for a good folding knife. Buy it for yourself or purchase it as a gift, either way you won’t be disappointed with your purchase.
