The Thumb Drive Holster from 5.11 Tactical is said to be the fastest drawing and the safest level II holster one can find for purchase currently. With 5.11′s thumb activated safety the weapon is secure at all times and the Chop Block feature which is an optional feature ensures others won’t be able to remove your weapon during a struggle for weapon retention.
For the first couple years of it being on the market the Thumb Drive Holster was only available for Glock handguns. That changed in 2012 where they released a version suitable for use with Beretta, SIG Sauer and Smith and Wesson weapons at the 2012 SHOT Show. Since there are different models to fit different guns you must do the due diligence of ensuring you are purchasing the right model.
The holster has two removable belt loops; one paddle loop and the other is a loop featuring an adjustable spacer. If you remove the spacer the holster can be mounted to a duty belt that is 2.25 inches in width. You can attach the removable belt loop to the back of the holster with the use of three screws. This allows you to secure the back plate to the holster and also provides a degree of adjustment.
The built in retention feature is one of the things that makes the ThumbDrive unique. A small wedge on the inside of the holster snaps across the trigger guard of the pistol, locking the pistol in place. The only way for the pistol to be removed is by pressing the button on the edge of the inside of the holster. The wedge will always stay locked until this button is released. Once you holster your weapon the wedge will automatically snap over the trigger.
Releasing your weapon may take some getting used to and you will see that some reviewers attest to this. You will have to keep the release button depressed until the gun is lifted up past the wedge that locks it into place.
Made from rigid and durable plastic that is scratch and heat resistant this holster provides exceptionally value for money. There are a number of mounting options to choose from with this holster including as a thigh holster with the use of a mounting plate as well as offset belt loop mounting positions and dropped belt loop mounting positions.
